The UN Security Council positions on Syria


The Saudi daily Asharq Alawsat today gives this rundown of the present standpoints on Syria of the 15 members of the UN Security Council:

Permanent members
  • United States: For Assad to stand down
  • United Kingdom: For Assad to stand down
  • France: For Assad to stand down
  • Russia: For Assad-Opposition dialogue
  • China: Against foreign intervention

Non-permanent members
  • Azerbaijan: Backs Arab League position
  • Colombia: Ambiguous
  • Germany: For Assad to stand down
  • Guatemala: Backs Arab League position
  • India: Against foreign intervention
  • Morocco: Backs Arab League position
  • Pakistan: For Syria’s sovereignty
  • Portugal: For Assad to stand down
  • South Africa: For regime-sponsored political solution
  • Togo: Depending on South Africa
